I was so excited for this run. Women only, door prizes, cool shirts, what could be better?! This was my first (and only, so far) 10K.
Jana and I met up at my house and we drove together. I found a parking spot fairly quick and we made our way to the starting line. We took a few pictures:
It felt like we were waiting for a while, but eventually everyone lined up and we were off. It was fairly cold that day and my toes felt like big ice cubes. They eventually warmed up though. Five minutes after we started the 5K started. It wasn’t long before the fastest 5Kers were flying by–they were amazing to watch!
Part of the course was an out and back, which I don’t normally like, but for this run, it was nice to know in advance where the 3 and 4 mile markers were, plus we got to see who was bringing up the rear (the ladies with the green compression socks!)
Around mile 4 there was a water/Gatorade station. I opted for water, while Jana took a blue Gatorade. BIG MISTAKE, neither of us had used Gatorade in our training and it didn’t sit too well with Jana. After the Gatorade we slowed down and just focused on finishing.
After we hit the mile 5 marker and I glanced behind us. Down the stretch, a ways back, I saw the green sock ladies approaching. Jana and I picked up our pace and finished strong.
We grabbed our food and went in to the school to see about the door prizes. The gym was hot and crowded and half the prizes were already given away before we even finished the run. I was pretty disappointed, especially since I had messaged the race director ahead of time about this very issue (I’m pokey and I know it!). We made our way back to the car and drove to the post race party (where there would be more door prizes, like coach purses and Godiva chocolate) but the parking lot was so full, we knew we’d never even get in the door. We gave up and drove back to my house. In hind sight, the course itself was nice, but evidently this race has grown a lot in the last year or two. I won’t consider running this race again unless they have a change in venue to accommodate all the runners.
